HospiTel: A Novel Solution in Times of Crisis

THE CHALLENGE

In just eight weeks, against the backdrop of a global pandemic, we conceived, developed, and prototyped a revolutionary business: 'HospiTel' – a testament to the power of business design.

WHERE WE CAME FROM
The urgency of COVID-19 propelled us. It was an exemplary instance of swift, intentional collaboration. Every team member sidelined their ego, channelling their expertise with unparalleled vigour. We were racing against time, and the stakes were immense.
— Hugh Evans, Co-Founder FromHereOn

As the world grappled with the onset of COVID-19 in February 2020, healthcare services faced the daunting task of scaling their capacity to accommodate an unprecedented surge in patients. Simultaneously, the travel, leisure, and hospitality sectors felt the weight of lockdown policies. Particularly in Australia, hotel occupancy plummeted to a staggering low of 20%, translating to around 240,000 vacant rooms.

In this environment of a healthcare system facing its limits and a dormant hospitality industry, the vision for 'HospiTel' was born. A unique solution: a purpose-driven, human-centric healthcare service designed to harness the potential of hospitals and underutilised hotels.

IT ALL STARTS HERE

Crisis often breeds innovation. Our goal was clear: to fortify the healthcare infrastructure by expanding bed capacity for low-acuity patients and ensuring community safety. Assembling a diverse team, we embraced agile methodologies, navigating the evolving landscape of the pandemic and the logistical challenges of remote collaboration across Australia.

Our eight-week journey led to the inception of 'HospiTel', a testament to comprehensive business design. The blueprint encompassed:
- Defining the purpose, vision, and mission.
- Crafting the service and operating model designs.
- Establishing technology and information architectures.

Beyond mere design, we leveraged various competencies – from branding and marketing to infection control and PPE supply chains. We engaged with stakeholders, managed hotel operations, and even orchestrated patient transport logistics.

This video explains how we applied Business Design to create HospiTel, illustrating how this method can super-charge start-ups, accelerate scale ups and shore up large scale transformations

Challenges are hidden opportunities waiting to be unveiled through innovation and adaptability. HospiTel's conception isn't just a testament to our agility but a demonstration of how our Business Design methodology can revolutionise and accelerate organisational objectives and fast growth opportunities.

In a world where predictability is a luxury, our commitment is to harness purpose and agility, crafting success stories even in tumultuous times.
